AUSTIN’S RECKLESS KELLY GOES TO BAT FOR YOUTH BASEBALL
WITH CHECKS FROM BAND’S 1ST CELEBRITY SOFTBALL JAM
Austin, TX — Members of root-rock band Reckless Kelly were again on the field at
Round Rock’s Dell Diamond on June 30 before the Express-Iowa Cubs game to celebrate
all-American music, baseball and kids — with checks totaling $30,000 to The Miracle
League at Town & Country and South Austin Little League from their first Reckless
Kelly Celebrity Softball Jam held there in April.
Reckless Kelly instrumentalist Cody Braun — with front man Willy Braun and drummer
Jay Nazz — made the check presentation and has said, “We would like to thank the Ryan
family and everyone with the Round Rock Express for hosting the Celebrity Softball Jam.
We also say thank you to the artists, celebrities and sponsors that donated their time and
talent. Plus a big thank you to all the fans for supporting these great charities and making
our first year such a huge success. We will see you next year.”
Reid Ryan, president and CEO of Ryan Sanders Baseball Inc., owner of the Round Rock
Express and Corpus Christi Hooks, said, “The Celebrity Softball Jam is just our kind of
event, bridging baseball and music in support of great groups like these. The Dell
Diamond is a versatile venue dedicated to affordable, family fun.”
Steve Brown, president of The Miracle League at Town & Country, accepted the first
check, for $15,000. “We say that every child deserves a chance to play baseball, and now
we can give that joy to more children,” he said. “Thank you, Reckless Kelly.” With him
was Miracle League player Logan Garner.
“The idea for the Jam originated,” Cody Braun said, “when a few of us were watching a
ball game at the Dell Diamond, and we’re thrilled at how this has come together. We
expect this to be a fun, family-oriented event that can grow over the years and help out
some great charities in Austin and beyond.”
South Austin Little League Board Member and coach Patrick Nichols also accepted a
check for $15,000 with his son, South Austin Little Leaguer Jay Nichols.
Reckless Kelly, nominated as the Americana Music Association’s Duo or Group of the
Year (Americana Honors & Awards Show slated for September) and voted Country Band
of the Year at the Austin Music Awards in March, will hold the 2nd Reckless Kelly
Celebrity Softball Jam in 2010.
The band’s single, “Ragged as the Road,” from its 2008 album, BULLETPROOF (Yep
Roc Records), charted at #1 on both Americana and Texas charts, and its “American
Blood” netted Willy Braun an honorable mention for last year’s International
Songwriter’s Award.

RECKLESS KELLY STANDS UP FOR SOLDIERS IN “AMERICAN BLOOD”
Reckless Kelly takes a boot-stomping, guitar-driven rock song and creates a stirring anti-war anthem with “American Blood” off their upcoming album ‘Bulletproof’ (June 24th, Yep Roc).
The heart-wrenching story of an 18-year-old boy going off to war asks “what happens when soldiers return home,” and criticizes someone named “George” for sitting “home with his feet on his desk, while the boys got theirs in the sand.”
Upon hearing the song, Nick Spitzer, host of the syndicated radio show American Routes said, “’American Blood’ could be the song that legitimizes critiquing America while loving the country.”

Reckless Kelly’s Willy Braun on “American Blood”:
When I wrote “American Blood” I knew some people were not going to like it and I realize that there are some lyrics in the song that could seem offensive or disrespectful if misinterpreted. I hope that listeners will realize that the song is about the fact that there are some people in Washington making a lot of money on this war at the expense of the 30,000+ American soldiers who have been killed or injured on the frontlines. It’s about the sacrifices made and the toll that a war takes on a country and it’s people, and is in no way anti- soldier or anti- American.
I’ve never been a very political guy. I’m just a songwriter trying to tell a story and would never disrespect America or the brave soldiers fighting for our freedom. I can honestly understand how such a subject must hit so close to home for the families of the members of our armed forces, and hope that they will understand that “American Blood” is not an attack on them or their sons and daughters in the military, but an attempt to shed light on the cold hard truth that not everything about this war makes sense. Whether you are for the war, or against it, I think we can all agree that the troops deserve absolute support and respect for the job they are doing and their commitment to our great country!
The last thing I or any of the members of Reckless Kelly would want is for the brave men and women in the armed forces think that this song is against them or think that we don’t truly appreciate every one of them and the sacrifices they make for us and our country. We support the troops and believe the truest form of support is to wish that they all come home safely and soon!
We have dedicated songs to Soldiers at shows all over the country, and have had the honor of having some of them tell us things like “your music got me through a lot of tough times in Iraq.” We’ve had some great response to our “Reckless Soldiers” page on recklesskelly.com and have always tried to show our respect and support for the troops. I truly hope that people will listen with an open mind and know that “American Blood” is not an anti-American song, but a tribute to the sacrifices made by the men and women in uniform and their families that we have so much respect and admiration for.

"Thank you for taking a chance on this song and writing how you feel. Thank God we live in a country where you can do so. You may lose the respect of some that are too close minded and dare I say brainwashed to see the truth behind the lyrics, but even if the point gets across to one person with the ability to make a difference, its worth it."
"I'll never regret signing up to defend our country but I'm not sure that is what I'm doing right now. I once whole-heartedly supported this effort, but I now recognize it is time for something to change. I work with Soldiers that are on their 3rd deployment. They have missed out on over 3 years of their lives in their prime. there is no end in sight."
- Anonymous Captain, US Army - currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom Five"

RK's Wretched Again Used As Lead In Music for CMT's New Show, Wide Open Country
In its debut episode, Wide Open Country features world premiere videos
by Steve Earle, actress/singer Minnie Driver, Old Crow Medicine Show,
and The Duhks.
Grammy winner Steve Earle's "Rich Man's War" is directed by famed film
director Jonathan Demme ("The Manchurian Candidate," "The Silence of
the Lambs"). "Invisible Girl" by Minnie Driver ("Elle Enchanted," "Good
Will Hunting") is from the veteran actress' debut album, "Everything
I've Got In My Pocket." Old Crow Medicine Show, a punkified old-time
acoustic band, premieres its new video "Tell It To Me." The group is
known for playing songs from some of the earliest traditions of
American music -- tunes from jug bands and traveling shows, back
porches and dance halls, southern Appalachian string music and Memphis
blues. Rounding out Wide Open Country's world premiere videos this week
will be The Duhks' "Mists of Down Below." The band creates a new sound
with traditional roots, incorporating influences from blues, salsa, and
Celtic music. The group released its self-titled album this year, with
Bela Fleck producing.
Wide Open Country will mix it up with videos by Ryan Adams, Willie
Nelson and Norah Jones, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Alison Krauss & Union
Station, Buddy Miller, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band,
Reckless Kelly, Johnny Cash, Kasey Chambers, Charlie Robison, Dolly
Parton, Dwight Yoakam, Mindy Smith, Lyle Lovett, Pat Green, Nickel
Creek, Rodney Crowell, and Tift Merritt, all on the series' first
episode.
